The Process
Once you have decided to investigate the commissioning of a custom guitar, the process starts with a simple email or phone call. We will set up a time to meet face to face if possible and start the discussions that will lead to a beautiful hand made guitar built to your specifications.
It is my intention that you not only come out of this with an exceptional instrument, but also a clear understanding of the build process, the guitar construction and the reasoning behind every detail decision that we make together. The process is somewhat flexible, but the basic phases are as follows:
Interview and Specification - During this phase we will sit down together and discuss your preferences for playing style, acoustics, aesthetics and comfort related attributes. This will likely take more than one meeting. You are encouraged to play your existing guitar or one of mine to help facilitate the discussion and help s arrive at an understanding of your preferences. We will come out of this phase with a detailed specification of every major aspect of the guitar. This includes Tonewood selection, Body Style, Bridge Style Neck Profile, Scale Length, Hardware, Electronics and Finish. Example Spec Sheet
Design - During this phase we will determine the final dimensions of the guitar as well as generate designs for any custom inlay or other special features. We will come out of this phase with a completed Bill of materials as well as a cost and schedule estimate for the completion of the instrument.
Build - Any necessary materials will be ordered and the build will begin. You will be given regular status updates via email or phone at your choosing. Additionally, you will be able to check into a password protected webpage on my website that will contain up to date photos showing recent progress.
Delivery - If you are in Colorado, we can meet at a place of your choosing to deliver the guitar. We will discuss all of the aspects of the guitar as well as "care and feeding". If you are outside of Colorado, the instrument will be shipped to you with all pertinent documentation.
